Canton Residents to Face Tax Increase for Public Safety Enhancements
Jackson, MS – The city of Canton has announced a tax increase set to take effect on January 1, 2025, raising the millage rate to 8. This adjustment will impact property taxes and car tag fees, prompting mixed reactions from residents.
Many homeowners were not surprised by the increase, considering the rising costs of living. Raymond White, a resident for 20 years, noted, “Most of my money is going to tax anyway… The price of everything is going up.” The tax hike, while additional, was deemed necessary by city officials, including Mayor William Truly. He stressed that the increased revenue is essential for enhancing safety services within the community.
The tax revenue will be allocated to improving pay for police officers and firefighters, crucial for retention and recruitment amid competitive salaries offered by neighboring cities. Mayor Truly explained the urgency of the tax raise, citing challenges like staff shortages affecting public safety outcomes: “We had no choice except to raise our taxes.”
According to city estimates, homeowners will see varying increases based on property value, with $100,000 homes facing an additional $80 annually, $200,000 homes $160, and $300,000 homes $240. Additionally, those with vehicles valued at $50,000 will pay an extra $40 for their car tags in 2025.
Community member James Allen expressed caution regarding the tax increase, wanting assurances that additional funds will specifically enhance fire and police services before agreeing to pay more. This tax hike comes in a context of heightened concern for public safety, as Canton has recorded six homicides this year.
