Mississippi College, located in Clinton, Mississippi, has announced plans to change its name to Mississippi Christian University and discontinue its football program after the current season. The decision, made by the board of the private institution, is part of a strategic effort to focus on building first-class athletic programs that can compete for championships.
President Blake Thompson stated that these changes are crucial for the future of the institution as it prepares to celebrate its bicentennial in 2026. The new name, Mississippi Christian University, aims to highlight the school’s commitment to academic excellence and the cause of Christ for another 200 years, while retaining the MC logo and identity.
Following the discontinuation of football, Mississippi College will continue to offer 17 sports for its student-athletes to participate in. Athletic Director Kenny Bizot explained that factors such as the changing landscape of college football, the impact of NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) regulations, and rising operational costs influenced the decision to focus on other sports programs.
The rebranding and program changes are expected to position Mississippi Christian University as a comprehensive university with a strong emphasis on academic achievement and championship-caliber athletic programs. The new direction reflects the institution’s commitment to ensuring a successful future for generations to come.
