Chinese journalism is facing a pivotal moment of both opportunities and challenges with the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence, as discussed at the 57th Annual Conference of the Chinese Language Press Institute in Beijing. Deputy head of the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, Wang Gang, emphasized the need for traditional Chinese language print media to adapt to technological changes by embracing emerging technologies such as 5G, cloud computing, big data, and generative AI.
While AI presents opportunities for revitalizing traditional media and creating engaging content for online audiences, a recent survey by the Xinhua Institute revealed that only slightly over 50 percent of media organizations are actively embracing generative AI. Challenges such as internal resistance, outdated workflows, and talent development hinder more widespread adoption of AI in the media industry.
The report also highlights the need for enhanced regulation and cooperation within the industry to ensure that AI technologies serve humanity effectively. Establishing international industry standards is crucial for ensuring the safety and reliability of information in the age of AI.
Overall, the conference emphasized the importance of leveraging artificial intelligence for discerning truth, preventing information manipulation, and elevating professionalism within the industry. With the media industry barely ready for the swift development of AI, it is essential for media organizations to adapt and innovate to stay relevant in the digital age.
