Former NFL quarterback Brett Favre testified before Congress on Tuesday regarding the misuse of federal welfare funds in Mississippi. During his testimony, Favre admitted to receiving over $1 million in welfare funds meant for poor families, which he had to pay back, and revealed he has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Despite seeking to keep his receipt of the funds confidential, Favre claims he did not know the money came from federal funds meant for the poor.
Favre pointed fingers at others during his testimony, portraying himself as a victim of government officials who failed to protect the funds from fraud and abuse. He took shots at Mississippi Auditor Shad White, who accused him of misusing the funds and is being sued by Favre for defamation. Favre suggested that the challenges he has faced in dealing with this issue were worse than anything he faced in football.
Favre’s appearance was promoted by Missouri Rep. Jason Smith, who thanked him for attending the hearing. Smith and other House Republicans are seeking to restrict access to federal welfare funds and used Favre’s testimony to support their cause. Favre’s testimony raises doubts about the efficacy of welfare programs, aligning with conservative efforts to curtail the program under the guise of preventing waste. In return for his testimony, Favre gained a chance to plead his case on a national stage.
