Two homes damaged and evacuations triggered by Oakland Hills fire in California

A five-alarm brush fire, named the Keller Fire, broke out in Oakland, California, on Friday, prompting evacuation orders as it destroyed two homes. The blaze started in a home on Mountain Avenue and quickly spread to a grove of Eucalyptus trees, eventually growing to 15 acres. As of Saturday morning, the fire was 50% contained, with fire crews working diligently to extinguish it completely. Although the forward progress of the fire has been stopped, there is still much work to be done, according to Fire Chief Damon Covington. Two homes have been impacted by the flames, with dozens of other homes being threatened but not damaged. Evacuation orders were initially issued for Campus Drive and Crystal Ridge Court, and later expanded to surrounding areas.

Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao urged residents to evacuate immediately to protect their health and safety. One resident, Delane Sims, recounted how her husband narrowly escaped their home when the landscape caught fire and caused a front window to explode. Despite the loss, Sims expressed gratitude that her husband made it out safely. The community came together to support those affected by the fire, with Mayor Thao emphasizing the importance of protecting citizens and their properties. The authorities continue to monitor the situation and work towards containing and extinguishing the fire completely.
