Police hunt for second suspect in murder case as man pretended to be utility worker during home invasion

Carlos Jose Hernandez, a man from Dearborn, Michigan, was caught on camera posing as a utility worker to gain entry to a house in Rochester Hills, Michigan. He was later arrested in Louisiana and charged with felony murder and unlawful imprisonment in connection with the death of 72-year-old Hussein Murray and the tying up of his wife during a violent home invasion. The suspects claimed to be from a local energy company and duct-taped the wife before stealing money and valuables from the home.

Hernandez was also wanted for an alleged armed robbery in Ohio and there is a manhunt underway for the second suspect involved in the attack. The couple, who owned a Detroit jewelry and pawn shop, may have been targeted due to their possessions. The victim’s wife managed to call 911 after being duct-taped and briefly hospitalized after the horrifying ordeal.

The Oakland County Prosecutor has authorized the highest charge of felony murder, carrying a mandatory life sentence without parole, for Hernandez. DTE Energy has issued a warning to residents to ask for photo ID from anyone claiming to be from the company and to call for verification if necessary. The incident has been described as a gruesome attack on an elderly couple in their own home and investigators are continuing to explore the motive behind the crime.
