Trump declares Democrats as a greater threat than U.S. foreign foes

In a recent interview, former President Donald Trump referred to Democrats and others who have opposed or investigated him as “the enemy from within,” suggesting that they are more dangerous to the United States than major foreign adversaries like Russia and China. Trump specifically called out Adam Schiff, a California representative and Democratic nominee for Senate, as one of these “lunatics” within the country. Trump believes that a strong president could handle outside enemies easily, but those within the country pose a greater threat.

This rhetoric from Trump comes as he gears up for the 2024 presidential race, where he has been increasingly labeling his opponents, including Vice President Kamala Harris, as criminals. Trump’s comments at a recent rally in California echoed his sentiments about Schiff, whom he described as the mastermind behind the Russia hoax. Schiff, in response, questioned Trump’s obsession with him and reiterated his past criticisms of the former president.

Trump and House Republicans have long been critical of Schiff, going back to his role in the 2019 impeachment inquiry. House Republicans have even censured Schiff, accusing him of misrepresenting the findings of the investigation into Trump’s ties to Russia. Despite these attacks, Schiff remains leading in the California Senate race against Republican candidate Steve Garvey. Trump’s continued focus on Schiff and other perceived enemies within the country reflects his ongoing adversarial attitude towards those who have opposed him.
