Former President Donald Trump called for the death penalty for any migrant who kills an American citizen or law enforcement officer during a campaign rally in Reno, Nevada. He also made the same statement during a rally in Aurora, Colorado, where he spoke of rescuing the city from migrants he claimed had invaded and conquered it. Trump has previously called for using the death penalty against human and drug traffickers.
Trump’s comments come as he ramps up his anti-immigrant rhetoric in an attempt to defeat Vice President Kamala Harris, whom he has tried to portray as responsible for the Biden administration’s immigration policies. He has frequently portrayed noncitizens entering the United States as a threat to Americans’ livelihood and safety.
A Trump campaign spokesperson did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the matter. Trump has also spread similar claims linking immigrants to violence in other states, including baselessly alleging that Haitian immigrants were eating local pets in Springfield, Ohio, despite local officials denying any credible reports of such incidents.
Aurora Mayor Mike Coffman, a Republican, has pushed back against Trump’s claims, stating that the narrative of the city being overrun by gang members is not accurate. Overall, Trump’s rhetoric regarding immigration and calls for the death penalty for migrants who commit crimes have sparked controversy and raised concerns about the impact on public perception and policy.
