Former President Donald Trump’s campaign has requested additional security measures due to increased threats against his life. The campaign asked for military assets, such as armored cars, protection while flying, and temporary airspace restrictions. White House Chief of Staff Jeff Zients connected Trump’s campaign co-manager with Department of Homeland Security and Secret Service leadership to address the requests. The campaign also requested special forces service members for protection, although this was denied by a source. The Secret Service has provided the highest level of protection for Trump, including enhanced communications capabilities, resourcing, and protective operations since two alleged assassination attempts on the former president. The campaign has also used additional tactics and evasive maneuvers to reduce predictability in movements. Despite the requests for more security assets, the Pentagon and Secret Service expressed concerns about violating federal law restricting the use of the military for domestic purposes. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin approved increased support for candidates, including explosive experts and technicians, overseen by U.S. Northern Command. The Secret Service has implemented measures like temporary flight restrictions over Trump’s residence and during travel, as well as using advanced technology like unmanned aerial vehicles and counter unmanned aerial surveillance systems for his protection. Trump is currently receiving the same level of protection as President Joe Biden. The Trump campaign’s security requests have not been met with action for weeks, according to a source.
