In portraying Garrett Morris in the upcoming film “Saturday Night,” actor Lamorne Morris felt pressure to accurately capture the comedian’s experience on the set of “Saturday Night Live.” Morris drew on his own struggles with being typecast as “the Black dude” in his early career, which he found similar to Morris’ experience. Director Jason Reitman also helped Morris understand Morris’ feelings of being marginalized on the show. Despite some fictionalized elements in the film, Morris believes it accurately portrays the challenges Morris faced as a Black performer in the industry. Morris praised Morris for his contributions to the Civil Rights Movement and efforts to desegregate unions, suggesting there should be a movie about Morris’ life. Morris’ next project is the series “Spider-Man Noir.” “Saturday Night” opens nationwide on October 11th. Morris hopes the film will shed light on Morris’ legacy and the obstacles he overcame in his career.
