Beirut in Shock after Deadly Israeli Strike; Iran Issues Caution to Arab Nations against Assisting Israel in Attacks

The Israeli military has reported that they killed the head of the Islamic Jihad militant group’s network in Nur Shams, a Palestinian refugee camp in the West Bank. Muhammad Abdullah was targeted in an airstrike in the Tulkarm area, with a second militant also killed in the operation. Abdullah had been responsible for numerous attacks against Israeli forces in the area, taking over after the previous head of the network was killed in August.

Iran has been warning Arab nations not to allow Israel to use their airspace for any retaliatory strikes, following Tehran’s ballistic missile barrage. Iran’s president and foreign minister have been meeting with Gulf countries such as Qatar and Saudi Arabia to emphasize this message. Arab nations, who host U.S. bases and oil installations crucial to the global economy, fear becoming targets in any potential conflict involving Iran and Israel. Diplomats in the region are focused on de-escalation and believe it is unlikely that any Arab nation would agree to allow their airspace to be used for Israeli strikes on Iran.

Meanwhile, early photos have revealed the destruction caused by Israeli strikes in Beirut and Gaza. Israel has been accused by the United Nations of attacking its peacekeeping force on the Lebanese border, in addition to the airstrikes in Gaza’s Deir Al-Balah and Beirut. Israel’s targeting of U.N. peacekeepers has escalated tensions in the region further.
