U.S. intelligence officials have warned that foreign adversaries such as Russia, China, Iran, and Cuba are expected to engage in disinformation campaigns to undermine the legitimacy of the upcoming November election. These countries are likely to spread false claims about ballot tampering and question the validity of the election results, particularly if the outcome is closely contested. Russia is focused on undermining Vice President Kamala Harris and her fellow Democrats, while China is targeting specific candidates in multiple races using social media and online activities.
Intelligence agencies believe that foreign actors will also attempt to use Americans to spread their false narratives, either through influence firms or by manipulating individuals into laundering their propaganda through legitimate U.S. voices. These efforts are aimed at exploiting the trust that Americans have in each other to sow uncertainty and division. Despite these assessments, officials from Russia, China, Iran, and Cuba deny any interference in the election.
In addition to targeting the presidential race, Iran is also seeking to denigrate former President Donald Trump’s candidacy, and Cuba is aiming to influence congressional and local politicians to support their preferred policies. U.S. authorities have already indicted three Iranians for hacking Trump’s campaign, although the stolen information was not accepted by the Biden campaign. Overall, intelligence officials stress the need for vigilance and critical thinking to combat foreign disinformation efforts and protect the integrity of the election process.
