A high-ranking army officer, Lieutenant Colonel Muhammad Ali Shoukat, was among the casualties in two recent clashes between Pakistani military forces and rebels in the country’s northwest. In North Waziristan, six soldiers and six rebels were killed, while two rebels were killed in Swat. The military emphasized its commitment to eradicating terrorism and praised the sacrifices made by the soldiers. The Ministry of Interior reported that in 2023, 930 people, mostly security personnel, lost their lives to terrorist acts.
North Waziristan has been a stronghold for the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan for many years. While the army claimed to have cleared the area of rebel groups, recent attacks, including one in March that killed seven security force members, suggest that the Pakistan Taliban may be regrouping in the region. The Pakistan Taliban, while distinct from Afghanistan’s Taliban, are known to be allies.
