A state of emergency has been declared in Bosnia after severe flooding and landslides caused by a rainstorm left at least 16 people dead. The flooding has affected several towns and villages in central and southern parts of the country, with homes inundated and roads closed. Rescue teams are working to locate missing individuals and have called for volunteers and the army to assist with search and rescue operations.
Government officials have assembled a crisis team and allocated €10 million in funding for disaster relief. The situation is dire, with one resident recounting how his home was flooded in the middle of the night, resulting in the loss of his belongings and even his dog. The death toll is expected to rise as more victims are discovered by rescuers.
Rescue services are facing challenges in accessing affected areas due to closed roads and disrupted communication networks. In neighboring countries like Croatia, Slovenia, and Montenegro, heavy rains have also caused flooding, leading to road closures and overflowing rivers. Plans to postpone upcoming municipal elections in flood-affected areas are being discussed.
The situation remains critical as more rain is expected, posing a continued risk of landslides and further flooding. The government is urging for continued support and collaboration to address the ongoing crisis and ensure the safety and well-being of the affected communities.
