Comedian Brittany Furlan saved her dog, Neena, from being carried off by a coyote in the backyard of her Los Angeles home. A surveillance video captured the coyote snatching the small dog from poolside, but Furlan was able to climb the wall and retrieve Neena from the coyote’s mouth. Furlan expressed shock at the incident and emphasized the importance of pet safety in Southern California. Coyote sightings are common in parts of Los Angeles, and people are advised to not leave small pets unsupervised outside and to bring them inside at night to prevent attacks. Coyotes are known to be opportunistic feeders and can be attracted to trash and pet food left outside. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife estimates that there are between 250,000 to 750,000 coyotes in the state, and they have adapted to living alongside humans in many communities. Furlan and her husband, Tommy Lee, are grateful that Neena is safe and are spreading the message of pet safety in light of their close encounter with a coyote.
