A new report has revealed that US Secretary of State Antony Blinken ignored assessments indicating that Israel blocked US aid to Gaza, choosing to present a different conclusion to Congress. The leaked memos would have had major implications on US policy, as US law bans security assistance to countries that restrict the delivery of humanitarian aid. The US provides Israel with billions in military aid annually, drawing condemnation as the Gaza war continues. The State Department’s report went on to detail how Israel implemented bureaucratic delays and military strikes to hinder aid delivery to Palestinians in Gaza. At least 34 Palestinian children have died of malnutrition this year, sparking concerns about the dire humanitarian situation in the region. Earlier this year, the White House acknowledged Israeli efforts to block aid to Gaza, with Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich admitting to preventing US-provided flour from entering the territory. Despite the evidence of aid restrictions by Israel, US Ambassador to Israel Jack Lew urged Blinken to accept Israeli assurances that aid was not being blocked. As the International Criminal Court has ruled that Gaza is under Israeli occupation, there are responsibilities under international law for the occupying power to ensure the well-being of the population.
