Former NYC Covid czar fired for attending prohibited ‘private gatherings’ during peak of pandemic

Dr. Jay Varma, a former New York City Covid czar, was fired by the board of directors at SIGA Technologies after admitting to attending prohibited gatherings during the height of the pandemic. Varma, who was the company’s executive vice president and chief medical officer, was terminated effective immediately “other than for cause.” The policies implemented in New York City while Varma was a senior public health adviser under former Mayor Bill de Blasio drew national attention, particularly after Brooklyn Nets star Kyrie Irving was banned from playing in New York City for refusing to get vaccinated. Varma acknowledged attending a “sex party” in August 2020 and an indoor dance bash in July 2021 with more than 200 people. He stated that all participants were vaccinated and that he did not use the best judgment at the time. A spokesman for Varma did not comment on the firing, and a company spokeswoman did not respond to requests for comment. Varma previously claimed that video recordings of him describing the private gatherings were taken out of context and secretly recorded, but did not elaborate on how they were taken out of context.
