The Bridge Fire in California exploded in size over a 24-hour period, becoming the state’s largest wildfire and destroying at least 33 homes. Three major fires, including the Line Fire in the San Bernardino National Forest, were still largely uncontained on Wednesday. A man was arrested for “intentionally igniting” the Line Fire.
The Bridge Fire started in Angeles National Forest and quickly grew from 4,000 acres to 46,000 acres. The fire spread from Los Angeles County into San Bernardino County and was 0% contained, destroying approximately 39 homes. Evacuation warnings were issued as officials urged residents to leave immediately. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
In Southern California, two other major fires, the Line Fire and the Airport Fire, added to the firefighting challenges. The Line Fire burned over 34,600 acres and was 14% contained. The suspect is believed to have intentionally started the Bridge Fire as well. The Airport Fire, caused accidentally by heavy equipment, had burned over 22,000 acres.
The Davis Fire in Nevada also posed a threat, with extreme fire conditions expected due to high winds. The fire had burned over 5,800 acres and was 31% contained. Air quality alerts were issued due to smoke from the fires. Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency, mobilizing resources to combat the 16 active wildfires in the state. Evacuation orders and warnings were in place for various communities affected by the fires.
