Iran has denied allegations that it supplied short-range missiles to Russia for use against Ukraine and has condemned new sanctions imposed by France, Germany, and the UK. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman called the sanctions “economic terrorism” against the people of Iran and pledged to take appropriate action in response. The US had formally accused Iran of supplying weapons to Moscow, leading to the European sanctions that revoke air service deals and impose restrictions on Iran Air.
The Iranian spokesman denied the claims of missile transfers, calling them baseless and false. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken had warned that Russia could use the missiles in Ukraine soon and expressed concern about wider European security threats from cooperation between Moscow and Tehran. Iran dismissed the reports as propaganda and accused the US and Western countries of supporting genocide in Gaza.
Iran, already heavily sanctioned, may face further economic penalties that experts fear could harm its middle classes more than its leaders. The situation highlights the tensions between Iran and Western countries, with accusations and counter-accusations of weapons transfers and economic warfare.
