Cylib, a startup backed by Porsche and Bosch, is building a massive battery recycling plant in Germany to reduce waste from end-of-life EV batteries. The facility in Dormagen will be the largest end-to-end lithium-ion battery recycling facility in Europe, capable of recycling 30,000 metric tons of batteries annually. Recycled batteries will be used by Porsche, which invested in Cylib. The project is in early stages but aims to address the EU’s priority of sustainable battery development for electric vehicles. Founded in 2022, Cylib uses water-based recovery techniques to repurpose lithium and graphite from batteries. The plant, scheduled to start operations in 2026, will serve automotive, battery manufacturing, and chemicals clients, with plans for further facilities in Germany and Europe. The location at Chempark offers strategic advantages with preexisting supply chains. CEO Lilian Schwich believes industrial-scale production will help build a robust European battery infrastructure, emphasizing the importance of battery recycling in the circular economy and reducing environmental impact.
