Over the past 320 days, more than 40,000 Palestinians, including almost 17,000 children, have been killed in Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip. On average, 53 children and 72 adults are killed every day since October 7. At least 10,000 people are still missing under the rubble, with many presumed dead. The magnitude of this loss is staggering, as illustrated by the fact that the number of people killed in Gaza could fill up Madison Square Garden twice.
Visualizing the number of casualties, if 40,000 people were to form a human chain, they could surround the entire island of Manhattan. The line formed by these individuals would stretch for 24 kilometers, from Notre-Dame to Versailles in Paris. To further emphasize the scale of the tragedy, it would take an average person 12 hours to walk from the beginning to the end of the human chain, and a car driving at 50 kilometers per hour would take 72 minutes to pass the entire line.
Of the 40,000 people killed, 18.4 percent are women and 33 percent are children, highlighting the devastating impact on Gaza’s population, where almost half were children prior to the conflict. The destruction of more than 500 schools and the loss of an entire school year for Palestinian children further underscore the long-term consequences of the war. The international community must take action to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and prevent further loss of innocent lives.
