Former Mississippi U.S. House Reps. Mike Espy and Gregg Harper recently debated on which presidential candidate would be best for Mississippi during a Stennis Luncheon at Hal and Mal’s in downtown Jackson. Despite agreeing that Donald Trump would likely carry Mississippi’s electoral votes, they disagreed on the potential success of Democratic nominee Kamala Harris in the state.
Espy, the first Black Mississippian elected to Congress since the 1800s, believed Harris would benefit the state through federal aid and programs, including infrastructure improvements. Harper, on the other hand, believed Trump needed to act more presidential to secure a strong victory.
Harper criticized the Biden administration’s border and economic policies, while supporting Trump’s stance. According to polling data, Harris is currently leading Trump by more than three points.
Espy emphasized the need for a president who would support low-income individuals in Mississippi, including those without access to healthcare and minimum wage. Harper questioned Harris’ ability to withstand a debate against Trump, referencing Biden’s decision to bow out and support Harris after doubts about his fitness.
Despite their differing views, both Espy and Harper highlighted the importance of the upcoming election for the state of Mississippi.
