Hurricane Hone is gradually moving away from the Big Island but will continue to bring gusty winds and widespread rain to the region. The storm strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 85 mph, hovering 90 miles south-southwest of Kona. Hone is moving west at 8 mph and will possibly increase in speed in the next few days. A tropical storm warning remains in effect for Hawaii County. Residents could see 6 to 12 inches of rain, with an additional 3 to 6 inches in south-facing slopes, leading to potential flooding. “Life-threatening” surf is also expected on the island. Flash flood warnings are in place for most of the island, including Hilo and Waimea. Hilo International Airport has canceled some flights, and airlines are making decisions case by case on departures. Social media videos show trees shaking in the wind amid heavy downpour on the Big Island. Over 21,300 utility customers are without power on Hawaii’s Big Island as of Sunday afternoon. The situation is being closely monitored as the storm continues to impact the region.
