UK Home Secretary Yvette Cooper has ordered a review of the country’s counterterrorism strategy to tackle threats posed by extremist ideologies, including misogyny, Islamism, and far-right extremism. The review aims to map and monitor extremist trends to divert people away from harmful beliefs.
The review comes in the wake of widespread riots in late July and early August, with over 460 people appearing in court and at least 72 individuals under the age of 18 charged. Some were charged for publishing material that incited racial hatred, indicating a connection between far-right provocateurs and the spread of misogyny.
Misogyny in the UK extends beyond words, with physical violence against women still prevalent. Femicide Census reports that a woman is killed by a man every three days in the UK. The rise in misogyny has also been linked to the incel culture, where individuals, mostly men, express anger towards women and society.
Recent incidents, such as the Plymouth shooting by Jake Davison, have been tied to incel ideology. Cooper emphasized the need to address the rise in extremism, both online and in society, to prevent radicalization of young people.
The review will inform a new counter-extremism strategy for the UK, with Cooper criticizing the previous Conservative government for lacking practical plans. The aim is to crack down on individuals promoting harmful and hateful beliefs and violence. The government’s focus on analyzing and addressing extremist trends reflects a proactive approach to tackling emerging threats in the country.
