New leader of Vietnam meets with China’s Xi in Beijing | Political News

The meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Vietnamese President To Lam in Beijing highlights the close ties between the two neighbouring states, despite occasional tensions over competing claims in the South China Sea. Vietnam’s President To Lam chose China for his first state visit since taking office, underscoring the importance of the relationship between the two countries.

During the visit, which comes just a month after Lam assumed office following the death of Vietnam’s longtime Communist Party leader Nguyen Phu Trong, several agreements were signed to strengthen cooperation in areas such as railway connectivity, investments, and handling incidents in the South China Sea. Both leaders also discussed projects under China’s Belt and Road Initiative, as well as investment cooperation in various fields.

Despite the strong economic and trade relations between China and Vietnam, the two countries have had political disagreements, particularly over disputed territories in the South China Sea. In the past, clashes have occurred between Vietnamese and Chinese workers, leading to tensions between the two nations.

The meeting between Xi and Lam signifies a commitment to further enhancing relations between China and Vietnam, which have had diplomatic ties since 1950 and established a strategic partnership of cooperation in 2008. While both countries continue to face challenges in their relationship, efforts are being made to strengthen cooperation and address shared concerns in international and regional issues.
