A luxury superyacht sank near Palermo, Italy during a violent storm, resulting in the death of one man and the disappearance of six others. The 184-ft sailboat with 22 people on board sank due to the terrible weather conditions after being hit by a strong storm and tornado. Fifteen people, including a 1-year-old baby, were rescued by another ship. Four people were injured, with three being heavily injured. The captain of the rescue ship described efforts to keep the ship in position during the storm before noticing that the yacht had disappeared. The baby was being treated at a children’s hospital, while the injured adults were taken to the emergency room, with none reported to be in serious condition.
The search for the missing individuals involved divers, a motorboat, and a helicopter, with the wreck being located at a depth of around 165-ft. Divers from Sicily and Naples were deployed to search inside the sunken vessel. The luxury yacht, named Bayesian, was built in 2008 and could carry up to 12 guests and a crew of 10. It was last tracked east of Palermo on Sunday evening before the tragic incident occurred. The community was in shock following the news of the sinking, with one individual describing it as an “absurd tragedy.” Several organizations and volunteers were providing assistance in the search and recovery efforts.
