An Idaho man, Michael Eugene Mullen, has been arrested in connection with the shooting death of Nina Fischer in California over 50 years ago. Fischer was found dead in her home in 1973, having been sexually assaulted and shot three times. Mullen, now 75, was identified as a suspect using DNA evidence and was arrested near Salmon, Idaho. Fischer, a Swedish national, was preparing to move back to Sweden with her husband and young daughter at the time of her death. Her husband found her body when he returned home from work, leaving their 2-year-old child unharmed in another room. The case had gone cold after initial investigations in 1973, but in 2021, the Marin County Sheriff’s Office sent the case to the California Department of Justice’s Familial Search Program, which led to a possible lead after several months of investigation. After three more years of work, Mullen was identified as the suspect. Collaborating with the Idaho State Police and the Lemhi County Sheriff’s Office, Mullen was arrested on suspicion of murder and is currently being held in the Lemhi County jail, awaiting extradition to California. Mullen’s defense attorney, Dan Brown, has not yet responded for comment.
