According to authorities, Michigan man’s attempts to kidnap girls foiled by bystanders in 2 separate incidents

Two separate attempted kidnappings of young girls in Michigan were thwarted by bystanders in broad daylight, just an hour apart on Tuesday afternoon. Endi Bala, 23, from Shelby County, allegedly tried to kidnap a 15-year-old girl in Clinton Township, but a bystander intervened and helped the girl escape. Bala then attempted to kidnap a 7-year-old girl in Sterling Heights, but the girl’s aunt also intervened and was able to rescue the child. Bala was charged with kidnapping, reckless driving, assault and battery in the Sterling Heights incident, and with attempted unlawful imprisonment and assault and battery in the Clinton Township incident. He was ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation, as court documents showed he had a previous petition for hospitalization due to mental illness in April 2023. Bala’s bond was set at $2 million cash/surety in connection with the Clinton Township charges, and he was denied bond in connection with the Sterling Heights incident. He has probable cause hearings scheduled for both cases in August. The bravery of the bystanders, Paul Billiter and Alecia Swejkoski, in intervening in the kidnapping attempts was commended, with Billiter expressing shock that Bala would try to kidnap another girl after being thwarted the first time. The families of the young girls involved expressed gratitude for the quick actions of the bystanders that saved the girls from potentially tragic outcomes.
