Organizers of the Good Vibes Festival in Malaysia are suing the British rock band The 1975 for violating prohibitions by sharing a same-sex kiss on stage during their performance in Kuala Lumpur last year. Same-sex relationships are illegal in Malaysia, and the festival was canceled after the band’s demonstration, resulting in a financial loss for the organizer, Future Sound Asia. The lawsuit, filed in the U.K. High Court, alleges that the band breached their contract by breaking the rules they were aware of prior to the performance. The band had also protested anti-LGBTQ laws in Dubai in 2019. Malaysia’s minister of communications criticized The 1975 for their actions, calling them “very rude.” After a meeting with festival representatives, he announced the cancellation of the remainder of the 2023 event. The band’s defiance of Malaysia’s laws and regulations has sparked controversy and legal action, highlighting the ongoing tensions between artists advocating for LGBTQ rights and countries with strict anti-LGBTQ laws.
