New Mississippi State head coach Jeff Lebby is excited about the defensive talent on his roster that he believes is being overlooked. In an interview with On3’s Andy Staples, Lebby pointed out several players, including John Lewis, Stone Blanton, and Trevion Williams, who he believes will play key roles in the upcoming season.
Lewis, a redshirt junior, had a strong 2023 season with 20 tackles and a blocked punt. Blanton, a transfer from South Carolina, had an impressive season last year with 52 tackles, a sack, and an interception. Williams, a former four-star recruit, is expected to have a big impact despite limited playing time last season due to injury.
Lebby, known for his potent offensive units, is focusing on building a strong defensive core at Mississippi State. Despite limited recruiting time, he managed to put together a talented incoming class and added depth through the transfer portal, including former Louisville wide receiver Kevin Coleman.
With the season set to kick off on August 31 against Eastern Kentucky, Lebby is confident that Mississippi State has the pieces in place to surprise many in the college football world. The Bulldogs finished the 2024 recruiting cycle with the No. 26 incoming class, showcasing Lebby’s ability to make the most of difficult circumstances and build a competitive team.
