Former NFL quarterback Brett Favre is being ordered to repay the state of Mississippi nearly $730,000 in welfare money that was improperly spent on projects he supported. State auditor Shad White filed court papers demanding Favre repay $729,790 in interest after he received $1.1 million in state welfare funds that were misspent. Favre had used the funds to renovate a volleyball arena at the University of Southern Mississippi, where his daughter played.
Despite repaying $1.1 million to Mississippi in two installments, Favre still owes nearly $730,000 in statutory interest, according to White. White criticized Favre for thinking he was entitled to an interest-free loan of taxpayer money intended for the poor. Favre has filed a defamation lawsuit against White in response to the demand for repayment.
Favre, a former Green Bay Packers star quarterback, played in the NFL for 20 seasons and won Super Bowl XXXI in 1997. Throughout his career, he passed for 71,838 yards, threw 508 touchdown passes, and had 336 interceptions in 302 games. Despite the allegations of improperly spent welfare funds, Favre has not faced any criminal charges related to the matter.
