US President Joe Biden recently admitted that his poor performance in a televised debate with Donald Trump was due to “exhaustion” and a “bad cold”. In an interview with ABC News, Biden reiterated his belief that he is the candidate to beat Trump in the upcoming presidential election, despite growing concerns among Democrats about his candidacy.
Biden, 81, stated that he undergoes cognitive tests daily and blamed his debate performance on fatigue and illness. He dismissed polls showing a gap between him and Trump as inaccurate, and denied claims of frailty. However, one in three Democrats want him to drop out of the race.
The ABC interview, which was not edited, did little to alleviate concerns about Biden’s age and ability to serve as president for another four years. Some Democratic donors and business leaders are voicing their displeasure with his candidacy, with a few even halting funding. Additionally, political allies like Nancy Pelosi have raised questions about his health.
Former White House correspondent Ron Fournier expressed doubts about Biden’s ability to defeat Trump and serve as president for another term. Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey also urged Biden to carefully consider his decision to run, emphasizing the importance of listening to the American people.
As the election draws nearer, the pressure on Biden to address concerns about his candidacy continues to grow, with many questioning whether he is the best candidate to go up against Trump in November.
