A recent survey conducted by YouGov and Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) has found that a majority of Brits would support a public inquiry into the UK’s sewage pollution crisis. The survey revealed that 82% of respondents would back the next UK government setting up an independent inquiry into the discharge of sewage in rivers, lakes, and seas. Additionally, the polling data showed a significant lack of trust in politicians to address the issue, with almost 60% of people stating they wouldn’t trust most or any UK politicians to tackle the sewage pollution problem.
SAS CEO Giles Bristow emphasized the lack of public trust in politicians to address the issue and called on the next government to take action by launching an independent inquiry. The group has been conducting an Election Road Trip to speak to communities and activists working to clean up waterways across the UK, highlighting the widespread anger and concern over the current state of the country’s waters.
Bristow stressed the need for a complete overhaul of the UK water industry to address the issues that have led to the sewage crisis and posed a serious hazard to human health. With the majority of the public supporting an independent inquiry, he believes that it is essential for the government to take action and reshape the industry away from profit-focused practices.
SAS is urging political parties to go beyond their current commitments and prioritize the health of rivers, lakes, and seas by launching a public inquiry to investigate the sewage scandal and take steps to prevent further harm to the environment and public health.
