Pittsburgh police are investigating a hoax bomb threat that was made to the Tree of Life synagogue, where a deadly attack occurred in 2018. The threat was emailed on Tuesday morning and was quickly determined to be a hoax. The gunman responsible for the 2018 attack, Robert Bowers, was found guilty on 63 counts, including hate crimes, and sentenced to death. There is no connection between the 2018 shooting and the recent hoax bomb threat. The Anti-Defamation League reported a significant increase in antisemitic bomb threats in the United States in 2023 compared to the previous year, with over 1,000 threats, mostly targeting synagogues. The increase is attributed to tensions following attacks by Hamas against Israel and Israel’s subsequent response. Authorities are continuing to investigate the origin of the hoax bomb threat at the Tree of Life synagogue.
