The Lake View decision in Arkansas established that all children have a constitutional right to an equal and adequate education. The state is responsible for providing this right, and parents cannot deprive their children of it. Despite the failure of charter schools to improve education, legislators have used the idea of “parental choice” as a way to push for more educational options, such as the LEARNS Act. However, this act may not actually improve educational achievement in Arkansas and could be detrimental to students.
To address these issues, there is a push for an Educational Rights Amendment to be added to the ballot. This amendment aims to hold all state-funded schools to the same standards and provide universal pre-kindergarten education for all children in Arkansas. It also seeks to make the state’s educational system more equitable and less politically driven.
Supporters of the amendment believe that it is necessary to level the playing field for all children and ensure that they have access to quality education. The current state policies are seen as causing Arkansas to fall behind in education, health care, economic growth, and overall quality of life. By signing petitions and advocating for the Educational Rights Amendment, Arkansans can work towards improving the state’s education system and giving all children a fair chance at success.
