The Mississippi River at Lock and Dam 15, Rock Island, is expected to crest at 20 feet over the weekend, with a slow recession to follow, according to the National Weather Service. While thunderstorms and showers passing through the Quad-City region were not expected to significantly impact the crest, more rain could change that forecast.
The crest is projected to move southward from the Quad-Cities over multiple days. The current river level in Rock Island is at 17.86 feet, just below the major flood stage of 18 feet. Rain and storms are still in the forecast for Thursday and Friday north of the Quad-Cities, potentially affecting the river levels.
The city of Davenport has installed HESCO barriers in downtown areas as a precautionary measure. A storm sewer project at Marquette Street and River Drive in Davenport will be put on hold until flood waters recede.
Despite the weather conditions, the forecast for the Quad-Cities on July 4th calls for a chance of rain during the day and evening, with temperatures ranging from 82 to 66 degrees. Friday’s forecast is for sunny skies and slightly cooler temperatures.
