Mississippi River levels rise, Hannibal flood gates released

The city of Hannibal has installed all 5 levee gates along the riverfront as the Mississippi River continues to rise. With the river currently at a minor flood stage of over 19 feet, levels are expected to rise further heading into the weekend. Emergency Management director Jacob Nacke emphasized the importance of installing the gates now to avoid potential issues at higher water levels.

While the gates will cause some travel disruptions, mainly on the south side of Hannibal, events like Tom Sawyer Days will continue as planned, with adjustments made for areas impacted by the flood gates. The Mark Twain Riverboats are closed until further notice, but the Hannibal Cannibal event will have officers directing traffic to ensure smooth operations.

Tourists and locals alike gathered to witness the gates being put into place, with many expressing excitement at the unique sight. The city plans to monitor the river forecast closely and keep the flood gates in place until further notice. Hannibal residents are advised to be patient and plan for extra travel time, especially on the south side of the city.

The installation of the flood gates serves as a precautionary measure to protect the city from potential flooding as river levels continue to rise. The community’s response to the rising waters demonstrates a proactive approach to ensuring public safety and minimizing the impact of natural disasters in the region.
