GlobalFoundries Obtains Tagore Technology’s GaN Technology

GlobalFoundries (GF) has recently announced the acquisition of Tagore Technology, a move that expands GF’s power IP portfolio and gives them access to GaN (gallium nitride) IP. This acquisition will enable GF customers to bring differentiated products to market more quickly, with a team of experienced engineers from Tagore dedicated to developing GaN technology joining GF as part of the deal.

Niels Anderskouv, chief business officer at GF, expressed the company’s commitment to being the foundation of their customers’ power applications both now and in the future. The acquisition represents a significant step towards accelerating the availability of GaN and empowering customers to build the next generation of power management solutions that will shape the future of mobility, connectivity, and intelligence.

GF was awarded $1.5 billion in direct funding under the U.S. CHIPS and Science Act in February 2024, with a portion of that investment aimed at enabling high-volume manufacturing of critical technologies such as GaN to produce essential chips securely. By combining GF’s manufacturing capacity with Tagore’s technical expertise, GF aims to improve AI system efficiency, particularly in edge or IoT devices where reduced power consumption is crucial.

Amitava Das, co-founder and chief operating officer of Tagore Technology, highlighted the increasing demand for more power-efficient semiconductors and the role Tagore has played in developing disruptive solutions using GaN technology for power devices. Das and his team are excited to join GF and focus on market-leading IP to address power design challenges and support the continued evolution of automotive, industrial, and AI datacenter power delivery systems.
