President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s security service in Ukraine has revealed that they have foiled a coup plot that would have benefitted Russia while the country is engaged in a conflict with Russian forces in the east. The plot involved a group planning provocations in Kyiv and the removal of the country’s military and political leadership from power. The suspects were aiming to seize the building of the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine’s Parliament, to create social and political unrest that would favor Russia. The individuals involved in the plot are facing charges and could potentially face up to 10 years in prison.
Additionally, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, visited Kyiv for talks with Zelenskyy. Orbán has been criticized for his reluctance to condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and his opposition to European Union efforts to assist Ukraine.
The news of the coup plot emerged before Orbán’s visit, which comes as Hungary takes over the rotating presidency of the European Union. Zelenskyy’s chief of staff highlighted the importance of the visit in discussing the future of Europe and international law, as Ukraine continues to face fierce battles with Russian forces in the east.
Despite the ongoing conflict, newly-committed U.S. military supplies have begun to arrive in Ukraine, supporting the country’s efforts to defend against Russian aggression. The situation remains tense as the conflict continues to unfold in eastern Ukraine.
