President Joe Biden criticized the Supreme Court decision in the criminal election interference case involving Donald Trump, calling it a disservice to the nation. He emphasized the principle that no one, not even the president, is above the law. Biden expressed concern that the decision essentially gives the president unlimited power, with virtually no limits on what they can do.
Biden highlighted the importance of the presidency’s power and character, mentioning the need for wisdom and courage to respect the limits of the office. He expressed disappointment that the decision will delay the trial before the election, denying voters the opportunity to settle the charges against Trump.
Biden suggested that the American people should decide whether Trump’s actions on January 6th make him unfit for office. He questioned whether entrusting the presidency to Trump, knowing he may be more emboldened, is acceptable. The Trump campaign did not immediately respond to Biden’s remarks.
In a 6-3 decision, the Supreme Court rejected Trump’s broad immunity claim but stated that some actions related to his presidential duties are off-limits to prosecutors. The lower court will determine which actions qualify for immunity. Special counsel Jack Smith has charged Trump with counts related to the 2020 election overturn effort, to which Trump pleaded not guilty.
Biden did not take questions but has been facing calls from within his party to step aside after a disappointing debate performance. He has refused to withdraw from the presidential race so far.
