The La Crosse Public Library recently welcomed the paddlewheel excursion boat Mississippi Queen during its visit to the city on July 2, 2004. The 382-foot-long steamboat was in service from 1976 to 2008 before being scrapped in 2011. During the visit, a welcome committee dressed in late 19th Century attire greeted the boat, showcasing the city’s rich history and connection to steamboat travel.
The library is now seeking more information about the photo taken during the visit and encourages anyone with additional information or photos of the Coulee Region to reach out to the La Crosse Public Library Archives. They can be contacted at 608-789-7136 or via email at archives@lacrosselibrary.org.
This event highlights the importance of preserving local history and memories for future generations. The Mississippi Queen’s visit served as a reminder of La Crosse’s connection to steamboat travel and the role it played in the city’s development. By collecting and sharing photos and stories from the past, the library hopes to continue educating and engaging the community about its unique heritage.
