Estonia’s government has officially ratified the country’s full membership in the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), allowing Estonian companies, scientists, and teachers complete access to one of Europe’s leading research organizations. Previously an associate member, Estonia’s new status as the 24th member of CERN will remove financial barriers and open up opportunities for collaboration and participation in tenders.
Being the first former Soviet republic to join CERN, Estonia’s membership signifies a significant milestone in the country’s scientific advancement and cooperation with other European nations in fundamental nuclear research. With a focus on experimental particle physics, CERN aims to foster knowledge transfer, particularly in the high-tech field, boosting opportunities for Estonian entrepreneurs and companies to engage in CERN projects and tenders.
Formalizing Estonia’s membership will require presenting a letter of accession to the director-general of UNESCO. Once completed, Estonia will join the ranks of countries like Israel as a full member of CERN, which was established in 1954.
