DA Investigating Welfare Scandal, Jody Owens, Raided by FBI

The FBI conducted raids at the office of Hinds County District Attorney Jody Owens and his business, Downtown Cigar Company, in Jackson, Miss., as part of multiple locations searched on Wednesday. The reason for the raids remains unclear, as the FBI has sealed the affidavit in support of the search warrants. The agency assured there is no threat to public safety.

Owens, a Democratic district attorney, previously made headlines in 2020 for announcing the first arrests in Mississippi’s $77 million welfare scandal alongside Republican State Auditor Shad White. In response to the raid, Owens’ office stated that they are cooperating with the FBI and continue to work on behalf of the citizens in Hinds County.

The FBI also visited City Hall and briefly spoke with Mayor Chokwe A. Lumumba’s chief of staff, but details of this encounter are limited. The situation involving Owens and the raids are developing, and more information may surface in the coming days. The Mississippi Free Press will continue to follow this story and provide updates as more details become available.
