Anticipated Mississippi River Flooding to Reach 20 Feet in Rock Island

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has revised flood predictions for the Mississippi River, with expectations that the river will reach 20 feet at Lock and Dam 15 in Rock Island by July 7. Matt Wilson, a senior service hydrologist with the National Weather Service, explains that this adjustment is due to predicted rainfall over the next 48 hours. While residents are concerned about holiday plans, the weather service only makes predictions up to 48 hours in advance for accuracy.

Wilson believes the upcoming flood will not break the record of 22.7 feet at Lock & Dam 15, as it is mainly driven by convective summer storms. He hopes for a dry period in the middle of the month to help flush out the excess water before any additional rainfall.

The rising waters are affecting 4th of July plans, with Wilson advising against spending time on or near the river due to safety concerns. As the flood levels increase, it becomes more dangerous for infrastructure and buildings in the area.

Predictions will continue to be revised over the next few days to provide the most up-to-date information. Residents are encouraged to stay informed about the flood levels in their area.
